Re Boot your forklift training without breaking the bank every 3 years

Here’s How

OSHA required refresher training is one of the most common mistakes that employers make in certification of their operators.

Every day we get calls from folks in a panic asking for a way to re-certify their forklift operators because the training outfit they hired initially is no longer in business and their operator’s certifications have “expired”

Sound Familiar?

Unfortunately, there are misinformed “Safety Consultants” out there that would have you believe that you are required to completely retrain and recertify your operators every three years.

Here’s a typical scenario - ABC Forklift School comes out and convinces you (the employer) to use their services. They waste an entire day of your employee’s time training and certifying your operators in exchange for some ridiculous sum of money.

The problem is the safety training organization has put a 3 year “Expiration Date” on the operator cards.

Many people that got into this business thought, “wow, this is great – it’s like the Golden Gate Bridge. Every 3 years we get to start over and retrain (waste our customers time and money) all over again every 36 months.”

These outfits (some are large well known safety training brands) even go so far as to inform their customers that they must endure all of the training, and time wasting they already received, but to make it a little easier they give them a nominal discount.

This approach is absolute hooey.

The OSHA regulations clearly state that there is no need for “retraining” as long as:

  • The operator has been observed to operate the vehicle in an unsafe manner.
  • The operator has been involved in an accident or near-miss incident.
  • The operator has received an evaluation that reveals that the operator is not operating the truck safely.
  • The operator is assigned to drive a different type of truck.
  • A condition in the workplace changes in a manner that could affect safe operation of the truck.

Refresher training, including an evaluation of the effectiveness of that training, shall be conducted to ensure that the operator has the knowledge and skills needed to operate the powered industrial truck safely. Refresher training in relevant topics shall be provided to the operator.

This doesn’t mean you have to completely start over to recertify your operators.

All that is required for recertification is a refresher evaluation of topics from the training materials and hands on competency evaluation. This can be performed by an oral examination and simply documenting (who – what – where – when) the event in the employee training records.

If you are searching for some honesty and an evergreen forklift training program you are in the right place!
