## How your in-house program works

## Formal instruction is one part of the process

The employer must ensure that operators receive formal instruction, practical training, and an evaluation of their performance in the workplace. Trainers and evaluators must have the knowledge, training and experience to teach operators and evaluate their competence. A course certificate alone does not establish those qualifications. Relevant previous training may count under 29 CFR 1910.178(l)(5); the employer remains responsible for operator competence and the certification record.

[Read OSHA’s operator training requirements](https://www.osha.gov/laws-regs/regulations/standardnumber/1910/1910.178#1910.178(l)).

## Included with your purchase

- Online trainer course
- Completion documentation
- Updates on OSHA changes affecting the program

Your trainer then provides operator instruction, practical training and evaluations. The employer documents each operator’s name, training and evaluation dates, and the identity of the trainer or evaluator.

## Common questions

### Does OSHA certify, approve or accredit forklift trainers?

No. OSHA does not certify, approve, accredit or endorse forklift trainers, training providers or course materials, and OSHA does not endorse a provider. What OSHA requires is set out in 29 CFR 1910.178(l)(2)(iii): training and evaluation must be conducted by a person who has the knowledge, training and experience to train powered industrial truck operators and evaluate their competence. The employer decides who that person is. A train-the-trainer course is how you give that person the knowledge, and the documentation, to stand behind the designation.

### Who is allowed to train and evaluate forklift operators at my company?

Anyone the employer designates who meets the knowledge, training and experience test in 29 CFR 1910.178(l)(2)(iii). There is no OSHA license, registry or outside approving body involved. In practice the designated trainer is a shop foreman, supervisor, warehouse or branch manager, safety officer or owner — someone who already knows the equipment and the site. The employer carries responsibility for that choice, which is why documented trainer training matters if the designation is ever questioned.

### How long does forklift train-the-trainer certification last? Does it expire?

OSHA sets no expiration date and no calendar renewal interval for forklift trainers. The three-year rule people have in mind is 29 CFR 1910.178(l)(4)(iii), which requires an evaluation of each forklift operator's performance at least once every three years — that applies to operators, not to the trainer. A designated trainer stays qualified as long as they still meet the knowledge, training and experience test in 1910.178(l)(2)(iii). Taking a refresher when the standard changes or when you put new truck types on the floor is good practice, not a legal deadline.

### Can I take forklift train-the-trainer training online, or do I need a class near me?

The trainer course is delivered online. It helps prepare the designated trainer, who must also have the relevant knowledge, training and experience. Operator training must combine formal instruction, practical training and an evaluation of performance in the workplace; an online course cannot replace the hands-on requirements.

### What do I get, and what do I still have to do afterward?

You get the online Forklift Trainer Certification course, documentation available immediately on completion, and notification when OSHA publishes changes that affect compliance. After that, your designated trainer delivers formal instruction and practical training to your operators and evaluates each one on the trucks they are assigned. The employer then certifies the result: under 29 CFR 1910.178(l)(6) that record must name the operator, the date of training, the date of evaluation, and the person who performed the training or evaluation.

### Do I need the training kit as well, or is the trainer course enough?

The $149 course helps prepare a trainer; the $399 Employee Training Kit supplies reusable materials for training operators. The $499 bundle includes both and saves $49. Completing the trainer course does not remove the requirement for relevant knowledge and experience. Individual operators can use our checkout to select operator training, with practical training and evaluation still arranged by their employer.

### What is the refund policy on the online trainer certification?

The online Forklift Trainer Certification carries a one-year 100% money-back guarantee. If the program is not right for you, return it within one year of purchase for a full refund.

### Which forklift classes do the materials cover?

The materials cover classes I–V and VII: warehouse rider trucks, narrow-aisle trucks, pallet jacks and hand/rider trucks, and rough-terrain trucks. Class VI tractors are not covered. The employer must ensure training addresses the specific truck and workplace.
